It was made up of the parishes of Redinha and Tapéus and had, in 1801, 1848 inhabitants. Inhabited since the Romanization, it had its first charter in 1159 which was granted by D. Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Knights Templar. In the fourteenth century, with the extinction of the Order of the Temple, it passed to the Order of Christ.
